Abstract

Yet another book on Biological Invasions ? It is true, the market already p- vides several recent works on this topic and,in the next few years, probably many more will follow. There are, however, two important points which argue in favour of the relevance and need of exactly this book. Most books on biological invasions treat only a small part of the subject. They cover either invasive plants or invasive pest arthropods, address invasive species of a country,an island or a habitat, discuss the impact of alien species on economy or evolution, or gather an impressive number of case studies. This book is clearly different insofar that it attempts to cover all (or at least most) of these undoubtedly very important topics.A joint effort of 42 speci- ists, it deals with plants and animals, includes both the terrestrial and the aquatic environment, guides us from ecology via economy to socio-economy, and comprises also administrative and management aspects. Our intention is a strong focus on mechanisms and so,in the opening chapters we analyse the main pathways of biological invasions and discuss the traits of good invaders.

Abstract

Until now, biological invasions have been conceptualised and studied mainly as a linear process: from introduction to establishment to spread. This volume charts a new course for the field, drawing on key developments in network ecology and complexity science. It defines an agenda for Invasion Science 2.0 by providing new framings and classification of research topics and by offering tentative solutions to vexing problems. In particular, it conceptualises a transformative ecosystem as an open adaptive network with critical transitions and turnover, with resident species heuristically learning and fine-tuning their niches and roles in a multiplayer eco-evolutionary game. It erects signposts pertaining to network interactions, structures, stability, dynamics, scaling, and invasibility. It is not a recipe book or a road map, but an atlas of possibilities: a 'hitchhiker's guide'.

Abstract

Abstract

The Nordic countries have a common goal to halt the decline in biological diversity by 2010. Indicators and indices are important tools to describe the development in biodiversity and hence evaluate the 2010-target.At a workshop held in March 2006, the quality, availability and policy relevance of biodiversity data in the Nordic countries were evaluated. Available data differ between countries but it was agreed that the overall quality of the data allows the development of an aggregated index (and a set of indicators) that can describe the state of biodiversity in the Nordic countries. In a Nordic biodiversity index, quantity of biodiversity should be measured as total area of each habitat type, both inside and outside protected areas. Quality should be measured as species abundance and, when applicable, as species composition and/or habitat structure (e.g. dead wood). The index should be illustrative, easily understood and based on transparent calculations and assumptions.
